From Corstorphine to Candidate — Andrew Simms’ Dunedin Roots

June 18, 2025

From Corstorphine to candidate — watch Andrew Simms share his Dunedin story and why he’s running for mayor in 2025.

In a recent episode of Dunedin Stories, Andrew sat down with host and fellow Future Dunedin Councillor Candidate Rebecca (Bex) Twemlow to share where his journey began. His story isn’t one of privilege or politics — it’s one of community, hard work, and a deep connection to the city he’s now standing to lead.

“I grew up in Dunedin. My family moved to Dunedin when I was four years of age. We had a couple of years in a State House up in Stenhope Cres, Corstorphine, before my Mum and Dad bought a house over in Waverley.”

Local Schools, Lifelong Friends

Andrew’s early years were shaped by the neighbourhoods and schools that many Dunedinites know well. From Grant Braes to Tahuna Intermediate and eventually Bayfield High School, his educational path mirrors that of countless locals.

“A lot of the people I made friends with at Bayfield are still my friends today… that’s stood the test of time.”

A Foundation Built on Grit, Not Politics

Andrew’s journey into leadership didn’t start in a university lecture hall or political office. It started with hard work — and a wax & polish.

“I started work at Moller Motors on Crawford Street while studying part-time at Otago. I was a yard groomer, then a trainee salesperson.”

This blend of working-class beginnings and academic study laid the foundation for a business career that would eventually see him grow one of New Zealand’s largest independently owned automotive businesses. But it all started in Dunedin.
