Meet Dr Amy Taylor – Dunedin City Council Candidate, 2025
A Voice for Those Too Often Overlooked
Dr Amy Taylor knows what it means to advocate. As a disability and community advocate, a mother, and a scientist, she’s spent years helping others navigate systems that too often leave people behind. Now, she’s standing as a candidate for Dunedin City Council under the Future Dunedin banner — determined to bring that same commitment to the Council chamber.
“I work in the community daily, and I know how many of our rate payers and rent payers are struggling.”
From Science to Social Impact
Amy holds a PhD in Genetics from the University of Otago and currently works as a Community Connector for the Disabled Persons Assembly. She’s also contributed to organisations like Graduate Women Otago, Plunket, Girl Guides, and the Otago Deaf Society, all while raising two daughters and building a life in Ōtepoti since 2010.
That combination of technical knowledge, lived experience, and community work gives her a unique perspective — and a clear sense of purpose.
On Homelessness: “This Shouldn’t Be Normal”
Amy’s campaign is rooted in compassion and practicality. She’s especially focused on tackling involuntary homelessness, describing it as one of the most heartbreaking issues facing the city.
“It breaks my heart to see people living in tents on the Oval in winter,” she says. “There is much more that our council and social agencies could do to alleviate this need — and it doesn’t all require huge spending.”
She wants Council to take the lead — coordinating government, charitable and council agencies towards real, lasting solutions.
A Future Built on Care and Responsibility
Amy’s values align closely with the broader vision of the Future Dunedin team: greater transparency, fiscal responsibility, and a future-focused approach that keeps people at the centre.
“Future Dunedin has a credible plan to ensure the future prosperity of Dunedin for the benefit of our children and our grandchildren,” she says. “As a mother, that’s deeply important to me.”
