Turning Heritage into a Springboard for Growth

Dunedin is a city steeped in history — but for Jo Galer, heritage isn’t just about the past. It’s the key to unlocking our future.

A long-time local with deep roots in advocacy, media, and governance, Jo is standing for Dunedin City Council under the Future Dunedin banner. Her goal is simple and strategic: champion the city’s historic architecture while driving economic growth that benefits everyone.

Leading with Experience and Purpose

Jo currently leads the Southern Heritage Trust and sits on the Dunedin Heritage Fund committee, where she’s worked tirelessly to highlight the cultural and economic value of Dunedin’s historic streetscapes. In her day job as a communications manager for the Otago Regional Council, she’s seen firsthand how joined-up thinking and better planning can shift outcomes for communities.

Her belief is that heritage should be a springboard — not a roadblock. “Let’s put Dunedin back on the map,” Jo says.

“We have the history. We have the heart. Now we need the right leadership.”

A Fresh Approach to Council Leadership

That leadership, she argues, starts by changing how Council interacts with the owners of historic buildings — providing practical support, reducing red tape, and unlocking incentives to restore and revitalise. Drawing inspiration from cities like Hobart, Jo sees an opportunity for Dunedin to thrive by embracing what makes it unique.

A Proven Advocate, Ready to Serve

With a background that includes journalism, university-level public relations, and a stint as the first woman President of the Otago University Rugby Football Club, Jo brings a mix of professional polish and grassroots experience to the campaign. She’s lived, worked, and led in Dunedin — and now she’s ready to serve.

Whether it’s rates relief, smarter building policies, or just a Council that actually listens, Jo’s message is clear: it’s time for Dunedin to honour its past while boldly stepping into the future.
