Future Dunedin will restore trust between the council and the community by bringing transparency back to decision making. That means minimising non-public meetings, minimising non-public workshops, and eliminating redacted or secret reports unless they are absolutely necessary.
We will treat the community with a greater level of respect and acknowledgement. This includes increasing public engagement through greater outreach and creating more opportunities for the community to give feedback.
Stop Unnecessary Secrecy
We will stop holding public-excluded meetings and workshops unless there is no other option. Too often, ‘commercial sensitivity’ and ‘privacy’ have been used as excuses to keep the public and media out of discussions that affect everyone. Future Dunedin will release reports and papers so the public can fully understand and participate in the democratic process. The community and the media deserve to be trusted with the truth.
Present All Options, Not Just One
The Local Government Act requires councils to present all options ahead of a decision. Future Dunedin will ensure this happens fully and honestly, not just presenting the council’s preferred option. Councillors and the public should be trusted with the complete picture, not just the parts that support one side.
Communicate With Respect
We will communicate in plain language, and insist on professionalism, respect and tolerance at every level. That applies both ways, between the DCC, councillors, staff, council-controlled organisations, contractors, and the community.
By restoring openness, honesty, and respect, Future Dunedin will rebuild trust and confidence in the DCC.
