Councillor Candidate Jarrod Hodson and the Future Dunedin team share their support for the future of Dunedin Railways Ltd.

The Taieri Gorge Railway isn’t just a scenic ride — it’s a world-class tourism asset and a core part of Dunedin’s identity. For Councillor candidate Jarrod Hodson, it’s personal.

“The Taieri Gorge Railway is a name many will be familiar with — it’s an iconic world-class trip right here on your doorstep. I am a strong advocate for Dunedin Railways Limited and all it brings to Dunedin!”

Rebuilding a Tourism Powerhouse

After being hit hard by COVID-19, Dunedin Railways Limited (DRL) was placed in hibernation to protect ratepayer investment. But with strong leadership now in place — including General Manager Rebekah Jenkins and Chair Adrian Januszkiewicz — the company is back on track and rebuilding with a focus on sustainable growth.

Future Dunedin believes in their vision. That’s why we support the proposed $2M annual investment over three years to help DRL restore full operations and deliver value to the city.

Why It Matters for Dunedin

The Taieri Gorge line is more than just a train trip — it’s a legacy. Built between 1879 and 1910, the track stretches from Wingatui to Middlemarch, following the route once used to link Dunedin with Central Otago. After commercial use ceased in 1990, the line was preserved through DCC ownership and transformed into a world-renowned tourist attraction.

Today, DRL’s recovery is a chance to turn that legacy into economic return and community pride.

A Clear Policy from Future Dunedin

  • Support full funding for DRL’s recovery over the next three years
  • Commit to a full review after the three-year period
  • Encourage locals to support and promote the service

DRL once operated near break-even for over a decade. With the right support and leadership, Future Dunedin believes it can return to that position — and thrive.

Let’s Keep the Wheels Turning

Future Dunedin encourages all residents to ride the different experiences Dunedin Railways has to offer, promote it to visitors, and see this not just as a tourist trip — but as a piece of Dunedin we can all be proud of.
